The Sunshine Vitamin ☀️

We have all heard of Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, but did you know that it's not actually a vitamin? It's a pro-hormone, needed by the body to perform various functions.

A deficiency can show up as brain fog, low immunity, hormonal imbalance, low mood, pain and inflammation.

A simple test, either at home or from the medical profession, can show you your levels. Although most of us in the Northern Hemisphere could benefit from good Vitamin D supplmentation.

To absorb Vitamin D naturally, we need at least twenty minutes of natual sunlight to fall on bare skin (whilst avoiding sunburn). Sunnies, hats and suntan lotion prevent absorption through the lighter, brigher months, and during the darker months, we just don't get enough sunlight.

Although we can get some Vitamin D from mushrooms, egg yolks and oily fish, we can not eat enough of these foods to maintain an optimal level.

The liver is the organ of Vitamin D storage, but with so many of the population having inflammation and toxicity, the liver is unable to store enough to see us through those darker months.

A good starting point is to get your levels tested either from an online company (Better You offer results in 48hrs) or from your GP/medical practitioner. Acceptable levels are those found to be above 50nmol/L or 20ng/ml. Supplementation is recommended if your levels fall below this.

When looking at supplements, look for Vitamin D3 with K2 added for best absorption, with sprays and capsules being more easily absorbed and utilised. Look for supplements without added fillers and binders as these add a burden on the liver, increasing toxicity. Excesssive levels or Vitamin D are toxic, which is why it is always best to test regularly and/or consider working with a professional.

If your live is overburdened with toxins and inflammation from a history of long term medications (including over the counter pain relief), then homoepathy could help detoxify and support the liver and other organs of the body, thereby allowing the liver to be able to store optimal amounts of Vitamin D, whether obtained from natural sunlight or from supplementation.
