Sleep can elude us all at times, and can be due to stress, anxiety, depression, alcohol, pain, jet lag, a change in working hours, menopause, caring for a loved one or even medications such as beta blockers, oral contraceptive and thyroid medications.
It might be helpful to go through the following checklist to see if making some simple changes can help improve sleep patterns:
- Make sure that the bedroom is not too hot or too cold
- Air out the bedroom daily - opening the window for 10 mins first thing in the morning
- Get outside in the early morning light to help align your circadian rhythm
- Remove your phone/tablet from the bedroom - use an analogue alarm clock instead
- Use a sleep mask and/or earplugs
- Avoid food or exercise within two hours of bedtime
- Avoid using bright, overhead lights in the evening - lamps and candles are much cosier
- Avoid screens/stimulation within two hours of bedtime
- Develop a regular wind-down routine, going to bed at the same time every night, and rising at the some time every morning
